All of the software below is either freeware (GPL), or shareware, unless otherwise noted.


You really should have these things installed:


• Sygate Personal Firewall very secure, uses less resources. Now owned by Symantec, we'll see how THAT turns out...The Bastages discontinued it! My link goes to the old version, though... Install, right click > options > updates > uncheck auto update!
• FireFox Internet browser, faster and more secure than InternetExplorer
• ClamWin Anti-virus Seems to work better than AVG, Not so centered on getting you to upgrade to their $$$ verion, plus free updates.
• AVG Anti-virus Catches WAY more virii than Norton or Mcafee, plus free updates. Stay away frome their firewall, it uses WAY too many resources.
• LavaSoft AdAware checks for and removes spyware / malware.
• ToniArts EasyCleaner Cleans all the unused entries out of the registry.



Productivity Software:


• OpenOffice, The free, Open Source office suite, does presentations, word processor, spreadsheet, 3D illustrator & database program.
• AbiWord, use with OpenOffice as the word Processor - opens & saves MS files!
• FreeAccounting small to medium business accounting package
• Free cad program



Editing/creating software:


• EditPadLite - replaces notepad - tabbed plain text text editor
• Nvu Web authoring solution
• Easy Gallery Generator creates html pages from a directory of pictures, complete with thumbnails, backwards & forwards buttons.



Multimedia stuff:


• FastStone image viewer has some real good image manipulation / viewing tools.
• AutoGK free DVD ripping solution
• Get MediaPlayerClassic here! a replacement for Windows Media Player, less system invasive, less Digital Rights Management centric.
• Audacity multitrack audio editor
• OpenFx 3D modeling / redering tool
• FoxIt! A replacement for Adobe Acrobat, or as I like to call it MudDancer™.
• Real_Alternative For use with Media Player Classic, so it can play Real media files
• QuickTime_Alternative For use with Media Player Classic, so it can play QuickTime files



Internet:


• EmulePLUS P2P application
• cFossThis is the only one that's not free! Windows traffic shaping application, controls the speed of p2p / ftp applications, so that your web browsing is speedier.
• Internet Radio Tuner, for listening to the thousands of radio stations on the net
• Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, GroupWise Messenger, and Zephyr networks.
• SUN Java If, for no other reason than MS is BAD
• UtilKit DLUL meter I love this litle bandwidth monitor, the company seems to be out of business. Working download links are hard to find for this file



Utilities:


• 7Zip Nice little archive program, love the right click "extract to" command, handles zips, rars & several others.
• FinePrint prints multiple pages per sheet, thinks it's a printer driver Trial version prints a small banner on each page.
• BartPE Windows XP pre-installation environment iso builder, the absolute best troubleshooting tool.
• EasyCleaner Cleans up the registry, after installing / uninstalling software.
• Serials 2000 Lost your registration number?
• ISOBuster Looks inside ISO images
• TrackerV3 A replacement for Windows Explorer with some advanced tools.
• BurnatOnce for burning ISO images.
